The recent research works on Information Technologies (IT) have originated new computing paradigms based on the capabilities of more and more intelligent devices, communications and systems: advanced services for everybody at everywhere and anytime, using green and unobtrusive technologies. So far, the impact of IT’s on social development has been unquestionable, but new applications are expected to contribute in a definitive way in areas of special social interest such as health, energy management, environmental care, education, leisure…
Ambient intelligence (the environment providing services that satisfy users needs in a seamless, unobtrusive way), green IT (systems that optimize and manage efficiently energy and natural resources), e-health (ubiquitous services for health and elderly care), etc. are those new paradigms for which the different IT disciplines (hardware and software design, communications, artificial intelligence…) offer solutions and tools.
These application fields pose relevant challenges to the different research areas. Among the most relevant we can find low-power and low-cost embedded system design, remote control and monitoring, transparent system integration, real-time fault-tolerant communications, decision support methods and systems, high performance computing…
Based on these challenges and taking into account the Arco group background and experience, this project is aimed at continuing the previous research of the group developing (1) new and efficient hardware/software architectures for low-power real-time embedded system design, (2) communication mechanisms that ease transparent integration of devices (from sensors to high performance computing systems) and applications, offering services efficiently in an homogeneous way, and (3) intelligent systems able to support knowledge modelling, optimization procedures and decision making processes.
